  1. The challenge

Three river basins. Competing water uses. Several institutions sharing responsibility.

The plans needed a clear picture of environmental pressures and water body status and the knowledge of the people who use the water every day.

  2. Our approach

With Deltares, Abkons assessed environmental pressures, water body status and significant water management issues.

The findings were tested in consultations in Prishtina and Gjilan and in a programme-of-measures workshop with ministries, basin authorities, municipalities, civil society, farmers and fishermen.

  3. Outcomes

    • Assessment findings presented and discussed with stakeholders.
    • Input from institutions and water users fed into the draft river basin management plans.

Local knowledge in the plan

Farmers, fishermen, municipalities and civil society sat at the same table as the technical specialists – and their experience shaped the discussion.
